Notes:

Meaning “conducted” in Danish, multi-media Swiss artist Not Vital (pronounced Note VEE-tal) created the works from the dirigerer portfolio using actual symphony conductor batons. Standing in front of a propped lithograph stone, with the resemblance of a musical lectern, and with the sounds of his chosen symphony resonating throughout the print workshop, Not Vital dipped the tips of the batons into a bowl of printer’s ink and actually conducted the symphony, for its entire duration, by drawing on the lithograph stone.

By actually immersing himself within his chosen score, the transitive act of mark-making by Not Vital not only gives a physical presence to sound, the symphony, as heard by the artist, but the performative process of interpreting the sound into a physical work of art pays homage to the automatic writing of the Surrealists, to the gestures of Jackson Pollock and even to the LSD and mescaline induced drawings of Henri Michaux.

Five of the six lithographs from the dirigerer portfolio have been executed to the music of three Scandinavian composers:

Sibelius, Finlandia, Opus 26

Sibelius, Symphony No.5 in E flat major, Opus 82, Tempo molto moderato

Grieg, Peer Gynt, Opus 23, In the Wedding Garden

Grieg, Peer Gynt, Opus 23, Arabian Dance

Carl Nielsen, Maskarade, Overture
